Amid the ongoing saga of Hardik Pandya and Mumbai Indians, Abhishek Sharma is also reportedly wanting to leave the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchise ahead of the IPL 2027 season.
In 2027, SRH is likely to consider Ishan Kishan as their captain, as their regular skipper Pat Cummins is unlikely to play the season or be part of the upcoming season because of national cricket team commitments. Ishan Kishan was the stand-in captain of the team in the previous season when Cummins was not with the team.
Abhishek Sharma wants to leave Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of IPL 2027
As the franchise would offer Ishan Kishan the captain’s armband. Abhishek Sharma makes himself uncertain about staying in the Hyderabad-based franchise for another season. On October 2, the Times of India, in its report, mentioned that thereis alreadyy multiple interest in the left-handed opener.
Mumbai Indians (MI), Gujarat Titans (GT) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) are believed to be some potential candidates for the batter. But nothing has been confirmed yet, as there will be a lot of factors behind a player’s departure. A departure can be involved in an all-cash deal, a swap deal, or a player-plus-cash deal.
A source close to the development claimed that Abhishek Sharma is unhappy with the franchise since they handed Ishan Kishan the leadership role in the IPL 2026 season. The source also mentioned that it is no longer a secret that the batter wants to leave the club.
Which teams are the top contenders to get Abhishek Sharma?
While the Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans, and Punjab Kings are considered the top contenders to get the Team India opener, Delhi Capitals (DC) also can’t be ruled out early from the equation as the former India cricketer and mentor of Abhishek Sharma, Yuvraj Singh, have joined the team ahead of the 2027 season.
“It’s not a secret anymore that Abhishek is unhappy at SRH since the captaincy went to Ishan Kishan. He has been with the franchise for a long time and clearly had captaincy ambitions. Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans, and Punjab Kings were being explored as potential destinations, and we can’t rule out Delhi Capitals either, since his mentor Yuvraj Singh is part of the setup now,” a source told the media house.
Some other teams that can be a good fit for Abhishek Sharma
The source further stated that there are a few other options in the market. As captaincy is believed to be the main reason behind Abhishek’s unhappiness, the franchises that are looking for a new face in their captaincy will be the best destinations for the attacking opener. Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants are still in search of their captains ahead of the IPL 2027 season.
“There are not many captaincy opportunities right now. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are two options, but most other teams appear sorted. So even if SRH and Abhishek agree to part ways, the big question remains: where to? And how will SRH position itself even if they agree? A cash deal? Player trade? Lots of factors,” the source added.
